I came to a complete stop when I saw this ad on a bus shelter in Calgary, as I initially thought it must be intended to create awareness of speech and hearing professionals or disorders. I was then quickly disappointed when I realized that this was an ad for Del Monte fruit.
As I walked away I realized that, unintentionally, this ad does make the point that speech (lips) and hearing (ears) are important for individuals to be able to participate in gossip sessions with co-workers. Just as the ability to hear and speak, for any reason, are important skills - some might say a basic human right - for people to be able to participate fully in day-to-day life.
To further hijack this ad, in order to raise the profile for the speech-language pathology profession, I will also mention that the ability to swallow, Del Monte fruit (or any food), also impacts our ability to enjoy life to the fullest. Especially when you consider how many social events, including gossiping around the water cooler, revolve around eating and drinking.
So there you have it - that is how a Del Monte fruit ad can be used to raise awareness of how important it is to be able to speak, hear, and swallow.
